When it comes to your vision needs, you don't want to take any chances. Our optometrist delivers excellence at every stage of your appointment and even provides senior and student discounts—with ID—to help boost savings for your whole family's eye care needs.

What to Expect at Your First Eye Exam

  • Visual Acuity Tests & Refraction Tests-What everyone expects at an eye exam. This is when you look at a chart, usually through a handy machine and the doctor will ask you which letter, number or image is sharpest.
  • Dilation of Pupils-The easiest way for the doctors to see inside your eyes. The most commonly known practice is with eye drops, but there are modern ways to dilate your eyes that don’t have as long of lasting effects. It is always a good idea to bring sunglasses with you to your eye exam so you can avoid sensitivity to light on your way home.
  • Slit Lamp Exam-Most people would recognize this as the scary machine you have to put your whole face in, resting your chin on a support bar and placing your forehead on a rest. It should not be scary at all, however! This machine examines the structures of your eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, and lens. During this exam, doctors will be able to detect diseases like cataracts, macular degeneration, corneal ulcers, and diabetic retinopathy
  • Ocular Motility Test (Eye Movement)-Helps your eye doctor determine how well your eyes can follow a moving object and also how well you can focus on two separate targets. (During this part of the eye exam, your optometrist is able to determine if you are straining your eyes during everyday activities like reading and driving.)
  • Depth Perception Test
  • During an initial eye exam, you will also receive a color blindness test. This test helps to rule out color blindness or hereditary color vision deficiencies.
  • Retinoscopy-this part of your eye exam is done early get an idea of the prescription you will need if your eyesight is not 20/20 or greater. The doctor will dim the lights and use a light to help determine the prescription needed based on the way the light reflects off your eye. This exam is commonly used for children who have a hard time with the comprehensive questions associated with an eye exam.
  • Other tests are performed with specialists if it seems like you are at risk for eye disease. Your optometrist will refer you to the right type of specialist, in those cases.

As you can tell, we provide you the most comprehensive eye exam possible to ensure your family eye care is always accurate and effective. Your trusted eye doctor uses the latest available technology to not only create the right prescription for your needs, but also examine the overall health of your eyes – and check for glaucoma, cataracts and other diseases that could impact your vision in the long term.

After your eye exam is over, we will then discuss all possible options to help correct your vision, including:

  • Traditional lenses
  • Contact lenses
  • Laser eye surgery
  • LASIX
  • Wavefront surgery
  • VISX

We'll make sure you have the information you need to make the crucial eye care choices that will determine how you see the world.

Eye exams usually take about 20-30 minutes and then we will fit you for your glasses or contacts, whichever you prefer.

Glaucoma Screening

Yes, it is the dreaded “puff of air” test. However, most doctors offices have other, modernized, methods of detecting glaucoma.

There usually aren’t any symptoms you can catch before your vision goes bad on your own and that is why routine eye exams are so important!

Glaucoma can be treated in one of two primary ways:

  • Laser surgery can be used to reduce the pressure on your eyes and in restoring your vision.
  • Eye drops can be prescribed, depending on how early in the progression of the disease glaucoma is diagnosed.
  • Medical marijuana has also been used to lower ocular pressure and relieve the symptoms of glaucoma.

Glaucoma screenings are a part of all of our eye exams. If you test positive for glaucoma during an eye exam, we'll be happy to discuss which treatment option is right for you.
